The Frontier of Beer

Just had lunch at the Little Toad Brewing Co in Solver City, NM and discovered that New Mexico is "the Frontier of Beer."

We have the map to prove it!!

The VLA

West of Socorro - in the middle of New Mexico - is the VLA, the Very Large Array - the radio telescopes you see in the movies.  And here they are... These pix were taken from the road, two miles plus, to give an idea how BIG these antennas are...

Paris plus 1 year...

A year ago last night was our first evening in our Paris apartment on Rue Saint Sauveur.  We stopped last night in Socorro, New Mexico en route home to Grren Valley.  Quite difference, but the sunset was beautiful...

Helper, Utah

Stopped here for lunch.  Another old mining town.  One Main Street.  Sort of neat to realize that such towns still exist far, far from the craziness on our coasts.

Park City Utah

On Friday we visited Park City, Utah outside of Salt Lake City. It's an old silver mining town that remade itself into a ski and summer resort.  A really nice atmosphere with art galleries and sidewalk cafés.

Hoover Dam

Visited Hoover Dam outside LV.  This is really an engineering marvel, not so much for the dam itself but for the speed with which it was built.  Buckets of concrete were dropped every 90 second, 24 hrs a day, for two years to build the dam itself. Wow.

In Salt Lake City

IIn Salt Lake City, Utah to visit old friends from our days in Korea.  SLC and Las Vegas could notbe more different: Salt Lake City is cooler, very quiet for a good sized city. It gives the impression of calm, friendly, middle class values that the US used to project to each other and to the rest of the world before we got caught up in our current wave of irrationality.  We really like it.

Red Rock Canyon

We visited Red Rock Canyon outside Las Vegas.  Amazing geology.  We may return to hike in the winter.

Las Vegas has changed a lot

Spent several days in Las Vegas with friends from Germany.  We came together to celebrate the ordination of our friend Dan to the Catholic permanent Deaconate after many years of study and effort. A good time!  But Las Vegas has changed from the place we knew in 1985 when we lived in California:  everything is BIG.  Hotels, casinos, roads are huge and busy. And no, that's not Paris...
